Sudanese Refugees in Israel

Over 120 refugees are detained in prisons, while all others live in kibbutzim or moshavim restricted to the settlement’s premises. The women’s shelter in Osafiya houses 11 women and their 21 children, waiting for their husbands to be released from prison and move to an Israeli settlement. Israeli NGOs appealed to the Supreme Court claiming that holding refugees in jail alongside criminal offenders is prohibited according to the UNHCR. The Court ordered the state to provide an explanation until early May as to why the refugees are imprisoned.
