This photograph was taken from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, looking uptown. It’s reminiscent of Berenice Abbott’s famous Night View, 1932, taken from the same vantage point but looking downtown. Abbott was revealing a side of the city that people weren’t so familiar with as they are now: The nightscape of thousands of tiny lit windows making a net of dotted lines. Today, the buildings are denser—only a tiny patch of West 38th Street is visible here—and the window shapes more varied.
