Coney Island’s Luna Park hibernates under a soft blanket of snow. The Cyclone roller coaster in the foreground, dating from 1927, is one of three New York City landmark rides in the area. The decades between the world wars, beginning when the subway line reached the beach in 1919, were the heyday of the Coney Island—its decline has been attributed to everything from the automobile to cheap air conditioning. Note the red gate on Surf Avenue at the upper right, with its pinwheel-shaped ornaments: It pays homage to the previous incarnation of Luna Park on this site, which closed in 1946 and had a famous grand entryway with these motifs.
